And now let’s talk about this final design!

The Story Behind Christmas Gifts
Today, the tradition of exchanging gifts at Christmas feels timeless; yet it is the result of a long cultural thread that stretches back far beyond Victorian stockings and modern wrapping paper.
The probably most familiar origin is, of course, the story of the Magi bringing gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn Christ. Over the centuries, Christian communities transformed this act of honour into a symbolic exchange between families, echoing generosity and divine blessing, but the practice of giving gifts in mid-winter is even older.
During Saturnalia, the ancient Romans celebrated the darkest days of the year with feasting, candlelight, greenery... (continue in the pdf)

The Legends and Stories of Panettone: A Sweet Tale of Milanese Tradition
There are desserts that simply appear in cookbooks, and then there are tho- se that emerge wrapped in legend, guarding inside their crumb the whispers of centuries. Panettone, the tall, domed, golden Christmas sweet bread of Milan, belongs firmly to the second category.
To taste it is not merely to enjoy a sweet loaf studded with raisins and can- died orange; it is to step into a story that stretches back through time, into kitchens warmed by wood-burning fires and streets (continues in the pdf)...

12 MONTHS OF CHRISTMAS SAL: September & October ornaments

My dearest wicked friends, you will hardly believe it, but I have managed to complete the stages of my Christmas SAL perfectly on time! And within our little group I even presented them promptly! Yet, I quite forgot to share them with all of you who are not part of our Christmas circle just yet. Perhaps, upon seeing these latest two charts, you might feel inclined to join us. And of course, two still remain: the November and December charts. Who knows whether I shall manage to be punctual with those as well…

This is the ninth stage but the eighth design, and I hope you’ll like it, because I can’t think of anything more classic and more representative of Christmas than wishing a Merry Christmas. Instead of a legend in this installment, I’ll be telling you about the origins of Christmas greetings.

The origins of Christmas Greetings:

Today, saying “Merry Christmas” or “Buon Natale” (in italia) feels natural and effortless, a gesture we repeat almost automatically. Yet behind this simple wish lies a long and fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years. Christmas greetings are not just a polite formula: they are the living echo of rituals, cultural exchanges, and human needs that have evolved over centuries. To understand their origins, we need to journey back in time, to the midwinter celebrations of the (...) - it follows in the PDF -

...and if there’s anything more Christmassy than saying Merry Christmas, perhaps it’s the Christmas Elves themselves. But what’s their story? I’ve written this little piece of research to brighten your evenings and inspire you just before you start stitching...

The Christmas Elves: Origins and Legends

The familiar image of Santa’s Elves, cheerful little beings dressed in green and red, busily crafting toys in the North Pole, is a relatively recent invention. Yet, these charming figures are the distant heirs of far more ancient and my- sterious beings who have danced through the pages of myth, folklore, and seasonal ritual for centuries. The word elf comes from the Old English ælf, and its Norse  (...) - it follows in the PDF -

The name of this pattern is Is Born:
for this occasion I have decided to share a reflection on the symbols we hold in common across time and tradition, both pagan and Christian.
I have titled this piece “Is Born” because, during the solstice season, something ancient awakens. The light is born, hope is reborn, and the sacred child returns.

“Is Born” : A Reflection on Solstice, Light, and Sacred Birth

Long before written history, human beings looked to the sky.
The winter solstice, the longest night of the year, marked a cosmic threshold, a turning point when darkness began to give way to light. For Neolithic societies throughout Europe, this moment held ritual and symbolic meaning, reflected in their architecture, their mythology, and their understanding of life and death.
At Newgrange in Ireland, built around three thousand two hundred years before the common era, and older than both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, a narrow stone passage aligns (...) - it follows in the PDF -

The name of this pattern is Candles:
This is the fifth design in our Christmas SAL, and for this special occasion, I thought I’d share with you a short Christmas lecture:

The Meaning of Lighting Candles

Lighting candles, a symbol of hope and renewal, has its roots in ancient traditions linked to the winter solstice. In many pagan cultures, the period leading up to the winter solstice was considered a time of great significance, when light was invoked as a sign of hope and renewal. Germanic and Celtic peoples, for example, celebrated the return of light with rituals that included lighting candles or torches. Light represented the triumph of the sun over the long night, symbolizing the end of darkness and the beginning of a new cycle of life and prosperity. Lighting candles, therefore, was a symbolic act of purification, protection from the darkness, and an invitation for the return of solar light.
With the arrival of Christianity, this pagan tradition was incorporated into the Advent ritual. The four candles lit every (...) - it follows in the PDF -

The name of this pattern is Gifts from the woods:

“The Night of Flurry, the Christmas Bunny”

In a quiet and enchanted forest, where trees slumber beneath the snow’s gentle weight and the air smells of pine and stars, lived an adorable white bunny named Flurry.

Flurry wasn’t just any bunny. Each year, on Christmas Eve, he was given a very special task: to deliver Christmas gifts to all the woodland creatures. It was an ancient tradition, passed down through generations of hares, but ever since Flurry was born with fur whiter than snow and eyes that sparkled like sunlit ice, everyone knew he would become the next Christmas Bunny.

That night, snow was falling like angel feathers. Flurry woke early, wrapped himself in his red scarf, and (...) - it follows in the PDF -

The Meaning of the Christmas Stocking
The Christmas stocking is one of the most beloved and iconic symbols of the holiday season, but its origins are tied to traditions that go far beyond its association with Santa Claus. Today, the stocking is seen as a container for small gifts, joyfully hung in anticipation of Christmas Eve, but its roots stretch far beyond Christian Christmas, with a deep connection to pre-Christian customs and rites.
The origins of the Christmas stocking can be traced back to (...)- it follows in the PDF -

12 MONTHS OF CHRISTMAS SAL: February ornament - By the Fire -

Hello my dear Christmas Stitchers, the second pattern of THE 12 MONTHS OF CHRISTMAS MYSTERY SAL is ready for the download. I am delighted to unveil the second design of this series: a cozy fireplace.

If you haven’t joined us yet, now is the perfect time to become part of our 12 Months of Christmas SAL! Our stitching group is filled with talented, kind-hearted people who share the same love for cross stitch and Christmas magic.
I would love for you to join us and be part of this special journey together. (Etsy is the more expensive due to Etsy fees, plus Etsy add taxes, which are already included in my other shops' prices).

The fireplace has always been the heart of the home, a place where warmth, comfort, and togetherness come to life. Throughout history, the hearth has been more than just a source of heat—it has been a gathering place, a symbol of family, and a beacon of light during the darkest months of the year. In many cultures, the fireplace represents protection, love, and tradition, making it the perfect subject for this stage of our Christmas-themed stitch-along. Much like the Christmas tree, the fireplace is an essential part of the holiday season, evoking a sense of nostalgia and joy. It is where families come together to share meals, exchange gifts, and celebrate the light that Christmas brings into our lives. Whether it’s the flickering glow of a fire on a cold winter night or the warm embrace of loved ones gathered around it, the hearth embodies the true spirit of the season. 12 MONTHS OF CHRISTMAS SAL: January ornament - The Lantern -

The Symbolism of Lanterns at Christmas: A Beacon of Light in the Darkness:

The lantern, with its soft, glowing light piercing the winter’s darkness, holds a deeply symbolic place in the traditions of Christmas. Across cultures and centuries, it has been a potent emblem of hope, guidance, and the triumph of light over shadow. As the world descends into the longest nights of the year, the gentle illumination of a lantern becomes a metaphor for warmth, faith, and the enduring human spirit.
The lantern also represents hospitality and protection. In the depths of winter, when the world is at its most inhospitable, the glow of a lantern at a doorstep or window signals welcome and sanctuary. It harks back to ancient customs in which a burning light was a sign that travelers, weary from their journey, would find shelter and sustenance within. In this way, the Christmas lantern encapsulates the spirit of generosity and kindness that defines the season, inviting all who wander to find comfort and solace.
The lantern also carries a profound symbolic resonance with the solstice. In many pagan cultures, the winter solstice was (...) - it follows in the PDF -

The 12 Months of Christmas (PDF patterns - mystery SAL)

The 12 Months of Christmas

As I delved once more into A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, a single line seemed to whisper directly to my soul:  “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”

These words stirred something profound within me, a reminder of the light and warmth that the Christmas season kindles: a light I wish to carry with me far beyond December. For me, the period from late November to Epiphany is a time unlike any other: a sacred space of joy, creativity, and endless inspiration. It is during these fleeting weeks that my heart is most alive, my spirit most attuned to the magic that surrounds us.

Epiphany, the day when Christmas celebrations traditionally conclude in Italy, feels less like an ending and more like a threshold. It is the perfect moment to reflect on the beauty of the season and to make a vow to carry its essence forward. From this reflection, The 12 Months of Christmas was born.

(Unlike usual, all 12 patterns have already been drawn, so there will be no delays, and you’ll be able to download them right on time!)

This project is more than a collection of PDF cross-stitch patterns; it is an invitation to embrace the spirit of Christmas as a guiding light throughout the entire year. Each month, if you choose to join, you will receive a unique and original Christmas design: some large, some small, some unveiled in stages. Each pattern is a step on a spiritual journey, a gentle reminder to nurture the joy, generosity, and wonder that make Christmas so extraordinary.

As the months unfold, you will weave a tapestry of hope and celebration, preparing your heart and home for the next December. You'll receive the list of links to download, month after month, your monthly ornament. By December, you will be surrounded by the fruits of your creativity—completed projects that radiate the love and magic of the season.

Let us walk this path together, honouring Christmas not as a single day, but as a sacred rhythm that infuses our lives with meaning. Let us cultivate its light, nourishing it so that it grows stronger with each passing month.
Welcome to The 12 Months of Christmas. A journey to keep the magic alive, always.
